Argentine Q3 biodiesel exports slip 30% due to US anti-dumping duties
In Argentina, biodiesel exports fell during 30% during Q3 to 353,034 metric tons on the back of US anti-dumping tariffs that quickly saw biodiesel diverted to other markets. Up until Q3, biodiesel exports had been up 26% on the year at 741,485 tons but the anti-dumping tariffs of up to 72% were announced in late August. The country has tried to negotiate a floor price for the US market in an attempt to lift the anti-dumping duties but so far no agreement has been reached that satisfies the US industry’s demands.
Argentina backtracks on ethanol price cuts after farmers complained
In Argentina, although the government significantly cut ethanol prices earlier this month, it has backtracked on those cuts to 7.5% for sugarcane-based ethanol from a previous cut of 15% and 10.5% from a 21.1% cut on corn-based ethanol. Ethanol producers complained about the drastic price cuts and demonstrated additional cost factors that had not been included in the government’s calculations, so the price cuts were adjusted accordingly. Ethanol production jumped more than 30% during the first eight months of 2017 while sales rose similarly by 24%.
Argentina expects biofuel exports to Europe to pass 500,000 tons in 2018
In Argentina, following the drop in anti-dumping tariffs to a maximum of 8.1% in September, the biodiesel industry has already exported 300,000 tons to the European Union, and it expects exports will jump to at least 500,000 metric tons next year. Prior to 2013 when the tariffs of up to 25.7% were imposed, Europe had been Argentina’s largest biodiesel export market. Despite the increase in exports to Europe, a drastic fall in exports to the US following the imposition of anti-dumping tariffs there saw overall Q3 exports drop year-on-year to $739 million.
Biodiesel production up 8% in July in key Argentine region
In Argentina, biodiesel production grew more than 8% in July in the key area of Santa Fe, with total production for the year through July reaching 1.2 million metric tons. The region’s 16 main producers accounted for 76% of national production that month, with about three-quarters of the volume destined for exports. More than 1.05 million tons of biodiesel were exported between January and August nationwide, up more than 15% on the year, at a value of $786 million.
